Alfreton Town turned on the style in the second half against Workington at the Impact Arena on Tuesday night, stretching their unbeaten Blue Square North run to eight games and regaining a spot in the play-off places as they moved up to fourth.
Josh Law opened the scoring for the Reds in the 55th minute with Paul Clayton cementing the victory five minutes from time, manager Nicky Law having named an unchanged starting line-up for the fourth successive game.
The visitors had to contend with the sending-off of defender Gari Rowntree in the 62nd minute, who carelessly fouled Jake Moult in front of the referee just a few seconds after receiving a yellow card for impeding Law.
The Reds had their own problems in defence when Matt Wilson twisted his ankle in the ninth minute, but at least Kyle McFadzean was able to take over for the bulk of the game after returning from injury himself.
Workington's best chances came early in each half, Stephen Hindmarch sending Ryan Bowman through in the third minute with Paddy Gamble saving comfortably, then in the 52nd minute Anton Brown had to clear a Lee Andrews header off the line from a Shaun Vipond free-kick.
Alfreton's first meaningful attack in the seventh minute saw Aden Flint blaze high and wide from Law's cross, then four minutes later visiting keeper Tony Caig had to tip over a by-line cross from Liam Hearn.
Moult's 28th minute shot was held low at the foot of the post by Caig after being set up by Law, then 12 minutes later McFadzean sent Hearn through but his drive took a massive deflection into touch.
In first half added time Anton Brown's fearsome 22 yarder was held well by the keeper, then Moult fired wide after Hearn and Clayton had combined in the build-up.
Hearn turned brilliantly at the by-line to leave his marker dumbfounded in the 53rd minute having been in receipt of an exquisite pass from Anthony Howell, his driven cross earning a corner from which Ian Ross had a header cleared off the line by Rowntree.
Howell figured in the goal that separated the teams two minutes later, his cross from the left perfect for Law's run to the back post and firm header into the far corner of the net.
Flint's header was tipped on to the crossbar from the free-kick that followed Rowntree's dismissal, then before the ball was cleared Moult fired in a shot that won another corner.
Clayton's 85th minute header was simple yet well executed, turning in Chris Shaw's corner at the near post, the only other action of note being a Ross free-kick that went close one minute from time.
