ALFRETON Town eased back up to fifth spot in the Blue Square North with a fairly comfortable win over Stafford Rangers at the lmpact Arena last Saturday.
With regular keeper Paddy Gamble ill, there was a recall for Craig Dootson between the sticks, then Nicky Law had to shuffle the pack after just 17 minutes when Anton Brown limped out of the game to be replaced by Jordan Hall.
When Paul Clayton sent Damian Reeves hareing for goal in the 32nd minute the latter was halted by Emmanuel Udoji, who received a red card for his intervention as the last line of defence.
After a short delay, Anthony Howell stepped up to place the penalty, his third success from the spot this season, cleanly past keeper Lee Evans and Alfreton were on their way with a man advantage.
Stafford did level the game eight minutes into the second half when Ben Mills smashed a volley past Dootson from 12 yards in receipt of a deep cross from Andre Francis, but the Reds had regained the lead by the 62nd minute through Clayton.
It was a superb through-ball from Kyle McFadzean that gave Clayton the opening, the goalscorer finding himself in space on the left-hand side of the area before firing a low drive across Evans and into the net.
With 79 minutes gone Liam Hearn, who had been on the field a mere four minutes after returning from injury as a substitute, found himself in familiar territory as the ball was played behind the Stafford defence and he sprinted towards goal before planting the ball securely beyond the keeper from just inside the penalty area.
With just 60 seconds elapsed, Reeves charged down a clearance by Evans but the keeper was able to recover the ball, then with ten minutes gone, McFadzean played Clayton down the left with the striker advancing as far as the six-yard box before seeing his shot blocked by Evans for a corner.
Clayton saw a volley parried in the 11th minute with the follow-up from Reeves spinning off Stafford skipper Bobby Wilson for a corner, then in the visitors' first attack of note nine minutes later, Mills played Nick Wellecomme through and although Dootson intercepted the run he did not make clean contact with the ball but the Reds survived.
Mills went close from an Udoji corner seven minutes before Alfreton took the lead, then in the 34th minute Wellecomme glanced a header wide at the back post from Levi Reid's byline cross.
Four minutes prior to the interval, Clayton and Andy Todd combined to set up Reeves for a shot from 22 yards that Evans dealt with comfortably, then a minute after Rangers had equalised, Wellecomme won a corner from Wilson's through-ball as Alfreton were caught on the back foot for a short spell.
Aden Flint had to scoop Reid's shot off the line in the 64th minute, then four minutes later at the other end, Ross delivered an awkward cross from the byline that Evans had to keep out at full stretch.
Richard Pell saw a firm header saved from a Ross corner in the 75th minute, then three minutes later Hall embarked on a long run before lofting his chance high over the bar.
Another Hall run with eight minutes remaining ended the same way, then in the fourth minute of added time, Evans tipped over a well-struck Ross free-kick.
