Alfreton Town suffered a rather tame defeat at the hands of neighbours Matlock Town on Tuesday night, bowing out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup to leave just 21 League games to fill the remaining four and a half months of the 2009/10 season.
Matlock set out their stall in the opening 45 seconds with Ross Hannah skipping clear only to spoil the move by attempting a pass that was cleared rather than firing at goal.
Hannah then had penalty claims swept aside before Ian Ross flighted a free-kick on to the top of the crossbar in the Reds first attack on seven minutes.
A cross from Anthony Howell on 14 minutes bounced between Andy Todd and Matlock's Liam King with Todd managing a stifled shot that home keeper Arron Jameson held, but eight minutes later the Gladiators were ahead through Nathan Joynes.
The goal stemmed from a Steve Warne cross following a free-kick and was fired low to Paddy Gamble's right from 10 yards by Joynes, then six minutes further on the Reds' keeper had to tip over from Hannah as James Lukic sent the striker through.
On the stroke of half-time Howell's shot from a Ross delivery was deflected for a corner, but the Matlock defence was hardly troubled again until the equaliser on 66 minutes.
A corner from Ross was met by a towering header from Matt Wilson and the ball flew into the back of the net from six yards and for a spell Alfreton looked the more likely team to score again, although Jameson was only tested by Steven Istead's low drive in the 72nd minute.
All that changed dramatically in a 60-second spell seven minutes from time though with Matlock scoring twice through Hannah and King, a Gareth Davies cross being swept home by Hannah then a 20 yarder from King entering the net via the angle of the framework.
